Know your numbers and reduce the risk of serious illness

Somerset County Council’s Public Health Team is encouraging Somerset residents to get their blood pressure checked for ‘Know Your Numbers’ week.

The national campaign, 5 - 11 September 2022, aims to raise awareness of high blood pressure (hypertension), encouraging all UK adults to check their blood pressure at home over a week. In Somerset we estimate there are about 50,000 people with hypertension who do not know they have it.

The Public Health Team have worked with the library service in Somerset to put in place a convenient, easy and free to access service – providing blood pressure monitoring kits that can be loaned from libraries across the county. The kits can be loaned for a fortnight allowing people to check their blood pressure, ‘at rest’, in their own home.

Anyone who then discovers that they do have high blood pressure can take their results to their GP or other appropriate health professional, who can advise on the best intervention.
Know-Your-Numbers!-Week-2022-poster
The dangers of high blood pressure can be easily mitigated with the right medications and lifestyle changes. The monitors can also be used by people who know they have diagnosed hypertension to check if their lifestyle changes and treatments are keeping their blood pressure in the normal range and provide an update for their GP.

Somerset Drug and Alcohol Service partners with Avon & Somerset Police in a bid to help reverse opioid overdoses

Naloxone
In preparation for International Overdose Awareness Day on Wednesday 31 August, Somerset Drug & Alcohol Service (SDAS) has announced a new project in partnership with Avon & Somerset Police.

This new initiative will see local PCs and PCSOs volunteer to receive training from SDAS to carry and use Naloxone (Nyxoid nasal spray) to help reverse opioid overdoses they may encounter as part of their day-to-day role.

In Somerset, Naloxone is available from 15 community pharmacies as well as SDAS Hubs in Yeovil and Taunton and distributed to appropriate SDAS service users, including family and friends. As part of this new project, SDAS will be working with Avon and Somerset Police to train and support frontline officers to carry Naloxone.

On Weds 31st August, SDAS will be in Taunton town centre promoting International Overdose Awareness Day and the availability of Naloxone. More information can be found on the Facebook event: (17) Overdose Awareness Day | Discover Naloxone | Facebook

In September, members of the public can register to attend free training with SDAS, where they will learn how to save a life by spotting the signs of opioid overdose and administering Naloxone safely.

For more information about the free confidential treatment and support that SDAS delivers across Somerset to anyone who is experiencing difficulties with their substance use or is affected by someone else’s, visit www.turning-point.co.uk/sdas or 0300 303 87 88
Walk For A Life
On the Saturday 10th September, attendees will walk a route through Taunton’s Town Centre in memory of all those impacted by suicide within the County. Walkers will be able to download a free sign to personalise with a dedication to a loved one. The walk ends at the Somerset County Cricket Ground, where a number of local partners and stakeholders will be on hand to offer information and advice.

Cllr Adam Dance, Lead Member for Public Health, Equalities and Diversity at Somerset County Council said:
“World Suicide Prevention Day is a day to raise awareness of how we can help each other and reduce the stigma that surrounds talking about suicide. The theme this year is ‘creating hope through action’ and we want to remind our communities that our actions, no matter how big or small, could provide hope to someone who is struggling.”

Various activities will be taking place, including shared reading and crafts, and students from Somerset Recovery College will be displaying their artwork in an exhibition.

The event will also mark the launch of Somerset County Council’s new ‘Orange Button’ scheme: a community-based suicide awareness scheme. The Orange Button will be worn by people in Somerset who have undergone quality assured Mental Health or Suicide Prevention training: whilst they are not able to counsel people, they can help signpost to relevant local services.

In preparation for the event, SCC's Public Health team are asking members of the public to share quotes, lyrics or poems that have helped them to get through difficult times in their lives.
