MHRA Alert - Alert for all Care Home and Home Care providers

You may already be aware of the Medicines & Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) alert that was issued in August of this year regarding the concern surrounding medical beds, trolleys, bed rails, bed grab handles and lateral turning devices, posing risk of death from entrapment or falls to an individual. We are also keen that all Home Care providers are aware of the possible risk of entrapment.
The following video may be useful in your respective organisations to assist with inductions or as an update for staff completing risk assessments. The video was produced by the moving & handling team in Kirklees. We have been given permission to share this with you all: Risk Management - Bed Side Rails and Bed Grab Handles - YouTube

Commissioners of the Community Equipment and Wheelchair Service are working with the provider, Medequip to establish which items of equipment that meet the MHRA’s criteria, have already been issued and are out in the community, and are working to review the actions needed in accordance with the MHRA’s requirements.

Whilst Somerset Council and NHS Somerset will continue to issue the equipment and will comply with the requirements, commissioners are asking care providers to ensure they act accordingly with their own equipment and take steps to ensure they remain compliant with latest actions, as issued in the alert.

You can find the alert issued earlier this year from MHRA here: MHRA Alert.

FINAL Safeguarding Adults Board Campaign-01

‘Safeguarding is everyone’s business’ – new campaign launched for Stop Adult Abuse Week

Somerset Council and the Somerset Safeguarding Adults Board (SSAB) have launched a new campaign asking Somerset residents to look out for members of their community who might be experiencing abuse.
The campaign, called ‘Safeguarding is everyone’s business’, asks that people do their part in supporting their communities by recognising the signs of self-neglect when they see them because self-neglect can be an indicator that someone is being abused. Acting early when you suspect that someone is neglecting themselves could save a person’s life.
If someone is struggling, getting them help early on can prevent things from getting worse, so if people are concerned about a neighbour, friend, or member of their community they can contact Somerset Council to raise a safeguarding concern by calling 0300 123 2224 or email adults@somerset.gov.uk. If someone is in immediate danger, the Police should be called by dialling 999.
Somerset has seen a rise in instances of self-neglect-related safeguarding enquiries over recent years – rising from 3.57% in 2019/20 to 7.69% in 2022/23, which is slightly above the national average. The poster campaign focuses on three signs of self-neglect which can be looked out for. These are hoarding, isolation from friends and loved ones, and losing interest in self-care activities such as maintaining hygiene or paying household bills.
The posters can be viewed and downloaded here: Safeguarding leaflets (somersetsafeguardingadults.org.uk). Please feel free to download and print.

Richard Selwyn

Richard Selwyn Introduces Connect Somerset

There’s something exciting happening all over the country. I’m coming back from a book launch in London about the power of communities and social enterprise, reflecting on the awful financial challenges we and our residents face, but also on an exciting national movement for change.
We’re part of that change in Somerset. The big question is: What if we’ve got the wrong public service model? What if, instead of the service starting with a professional or intervention, it starts in the community, or even in a family? What if residents could be better connected and resilient in their communities, and then wouldn’t need to see a social worker or GP or housing officer?
Connect Somerset is our contribution to this paradigm shift. Connect Somerset is a new (and not so new) way of delivering early help in the community. We’re starting off by connecting people together in localities — connecting teachers with local community groups and primary care networks. Connecting older residents to local resources and services. Connecting professionals together so they can work in a more relational way and wrap support around families.
But this is not a shiny new idea, this is about building and connecting the amazing hubs, community groups and public and voluntary services that we already have across Somerset.
And we’re doing lots of things to get that relational model working, such as removing IT barriers by setting up shared data or a shared case management system. We’re helping people to work in the same area and get to know each other and local VCFSE (voluntary, community, faith and social enterprise) groups. We’re working with Local Community Networks and the 300 Parish and Town Councils. And we’re setting up a new team around the school model as part of the Education for Life strategy — so professionals can give each other a call to ask for support, some coaching or to bring in early help for a pupil.
There are hubs — we have more than one hundred amazing hubs that residents know and love across Somerset. So, we’ll work from those rather than setting up something new. And we’re got 12 brilliant Connect Somerset Champions who are all community leaders that are well known. The Champions are helping to set up Connect Somerset in each neighbourhood and change the culture in public services, so we are more community orientated.
Over time, more services will shift to working in this community way, building social prescribing or neighbourhood teams, or investing in community-based support that builds social capital and improves outcomes (i.e. residents’ lives) much more than we can just by ourselves. As New Local wrote recently, this isn’t about the state getting out of the way, “This work will only success when community power meets a like-minded state”. i.e. this is about how we shift our perspective and work with the amazing resources we already have in Somerset’s vibrant communities.
We’re at the start of rolling out Connect Somerset. Look out for more info and an opportunity to contribute. Or just get in touch to share your ideas and be part of this exciting change.

CQC update – New way of working

Urgent Community Response (UCR)

Referrals for UCR will be taken via the existing route for all care homes, which is through Somerset Primary Link (SPL) between 8am and 8pm via 01749 836700, option 1.

Urgent community response runs 8am to 8pm 7 days a week.

UCR's aim is to respond to falls within 2 hours, reducing the concerns around long lies and thus reducing pressure to ambulance services if there is no medical need for conveyance to hospital, also providing support when a change to presentation is recognised as a preventative measure.
You can watch a video explaining the Somerset UCR at:
What is the Somerset Urgent Community Response?
Download the flyer here: SUCRS Referral Flyer PRESS
Please note that the falls lifting equipment and education has already rolled out to care homes.
You can also find more information on this website for details of services they provide and are not just limited to falls.
